Irish textile artist Muriel Beckett has been fascinated by the craft of hand weaving since her early studies at Dun Laoghaire School of Art and following that at The National College of Art and Design in Dublin.
The Irish Export Board awarded Muriel a year long scholarship to Finland to further her training as a professional handweaver, combining her creativity with further technical skills.
The simple clean lines inherent in Scandinavian design have been an enduring influence on her work. Other sources of inspiration include Japanese traditional and contemporary design, kelim and oriental carpets, and most importantly, the rich tradition of Irish textiles, poplin, tweeds, linens, and distinctive yarns.
Muriel Beckett’s tapestries and floor rugs have sold all over the world, from Japan, to Bahrain, to Lesotho and to America. Muriel has wide experience of the commissioning process both for corporate clients and for individuals.
